How to Take Care of Your Diamond Ring
Diamond Ring Cleaning
At the Holloway workshop, we use a professionally developed ultrasonic cleaning machine to keep our customers’ diamond rings looking brilliant. This machine uses high-frequency sound waves, combined with our very own specially developed cleaning detergent, to bring sparkle to even the most neglected diamonds.
Most professionals would advise gem owners to use such a device for cleaning their rings, but for those looking for a safe and considered home remedy, we thought we’d provide you with a few pointers. Too many times we’ve seen people get it wrong, and while diamonds are resilient you should look to have them properly cleaned on a regular basis.
How to Clean Your Diamond Ring in 5 Easy Steps
Firstly, a quick disclaimer – do not use bleach, toothpaste, or any other solution your well-intentioned mother recommends. Using gentle, non-abrasive cleansers is the only way to go.
Step 1: Make a simple soap, ammonia, and hot water mixture. Put the ammonia and dish soap into a bowl, fill it with hot water and swish it around to produce a few suds. We recommend a dish soap made from natural ingredients or one with a minimal amount of chemicals.
Step 2: Place your ring in the bowl and leave it for 15-20 minutes. Give the mixture some time to soak into the ring, as it needs time to penetrate and loosen the dirt and dust.
Step 3: Remove your ring from the solution and examine it. If you can still see dirt buildup, you’ll need to clean it further. Otherwise, you can rinse your ring in clean water.
Step 4: Use a soft toothbrush to brush the dirt from your ring. Scrub lightly, poking the bristles into the hard-to-reach crevices.
Step 5: Rinse the ring in cool water and lay it out to dry on a clean cloth or paper towel.
Seek the advice of a Professional
A clean diamond presents with more sparkle and is fiery. A dirty diamond, no matter how well it is cut will appear dull. Even a thin film of grease on the bottom of the diamond can interfere with the diamond’s light return and sparkle.
We recommend taking your diamond rings and diamond bands to a professional cleaner on a weekly basis for a thorough clean and general inspection, as this will help restore your stone’s original brilliance and ensure the claws are kept tight enough to secure the diamond. But for those looking for a home remedy, following these five easy steps, and keeping your diamonds away from abrasive substances, will keep your precious gems sparkling well into old age.
